let's talk equality

It’s been a damn long time since I’ve been on tumblr. However, I have a good excuse. I’ve been damn busy with school work and securing my future. For those who are interested, I’ve been accepted to an internship at my local women’s shelter next semester and I will receive credit hours for it! Also, (and this is a big fucking deal) I’ve been accepted to the Washington Center’s Advocacy, Service, and Arts internship program for this summer (I will also receive credit hours there!). This means I’ll be in Washington D.C. within two months (hopefully) working for a women’s issues advocacy group. I don’t know which site I will be placed at yet but they pretty much guarantee it will be something that I find interesting and rewarding. You have no idea how excited I am. Ultimately, I will be graduating a semester earlier than planned, have some totally awesome shit to put on my resume and some damn good experiences.
I’ve also been heavily involved in my local Sierra Club lately. Though the Sierra Club has a reputation for being mostly upper class old white folks, we are working on changing that. A dear friend of mine spearheaded the organization of a campus coalition (with just a bit of my help and i give her major props). Since then we have helped to create the Central Arkansas Young Sierrans group that is really trying to reach out to people under 45 years of age and minorities. I must say, I’m quite enjoying it and I’ve met some damn cool people along the way.
On another note, I’m considering creating a feminist RSO (registered student organization) on my campus. I have a friend who formed one on another local campus and had great success. However, I’m not really sure how active they were in the community. I would like to form a group that creates change and will do more than share a common interest. When spring break is over I plan on talking to some more of the fems I know on campus and getting an idea of what they would like to do.
So far it’s been a great semester. Sorry I’ve neglected you so much, tumblr friends.
